The SMR template is designed to present various types of communication about the brand. It can be used to direct the journalist and help them to access the information quicker but most of all it is a very important consumer tool. It makes it easier for the public to share and spot interesting information in their social networking communities. SMR gives brands the opportunity to communicate direct with the consumer, which will encourage further promotion of the brands amongst the consumers in their forums.

According to a new 2010 Cone’s report sixty-three percent of a new media users are more aware of the brand if they can interact with it on the social networking sites. The majority of them express their positive attitude and are willing to share information about the company if there is interaction between them and brand. In the end the interaction will lead to the most desirable outcome, which is increased sales. Fifty-nine percent of participants express their willingness to purchase a product after good online dialogue with the company that produces it.

Furthermore, the Consumer PR is adapting the SMR template quicker and finds it more useful than other PR tactics, taking into consideration a big number of product announcements, rollouts, renovations, and updates within which the short and interesting form is more acceptable and desired.
RealWire, an online media press release distribution service prepared an analysis of 997 releases (71 of those were SMR) distributed by them between December 2008 to May 2009. The results show that SMR performed generally better than traditional releases when it comes to generating editorial and blog coverage. 

 It means that SMR is a useful tool in order to reach an audience through different kinds of coverage and comparing it to traditional press release might indicate that more companies will start to use it’s template in order to get better results.
According to the report done by the Optix Solutions in 2010 there has been significant growth in the interest in the social media networking. More companies are planning to use social media over the next 12 months. The three top sites that respondents are planning to use during 2011 in their strategy to promote their company and to communicate with customers and stakeholders are Twitter, Facebook and Linkedln (with 90%, 73% and 67% respectively).

As a result, the popularity of SMR would grow not only because its helped to generate the coverage but also because more companies decided to adopt social media. There would be a need to use new PR tools such as SMR, because new audiences require new tools.
